Luci Englert McKean (that’s me) has lived in Bloomington since the late 1980s. She also feels really uncomfortable speaking about herself in the third person voice, so she’s going to stop that now.
Ahem.
What can I tell you? I’ve been a freelance and/or employed writer since the early 1980s, writing promotional copy, fundraising materials, and magazine and newspaper articles. I’ve been an “on-air personality” and reporter/announcer on two different radio stations. I’ve been a reporter for a daily newspaper and a freelancer for a few university and independent magazines. So I’ve been interviewing people longer than some of you have been alive, I’m guessing. Certainly I’ve been writing far longer than there’s been an Internet upon which to publish!
One day when I was in my early 30s, I realized I held the title and position of the job I’d dreamed about since I was in high school: I was a Creative Director, working with graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, and other copywriters to manage the creation of promotional materials for a variety of clients. Whoopee! It’s kind of daunting, unexpectedly recognizing a “dream come true.” It’s also sobering, realizing that “dream jobs” also include lots of actual work. Oh well.
At any rate, now I’m in a position to choose the work I want to do: this podcast. Now I can promote only the people and organizations I feel positive about. And in turn, you can feel positive that I’m telling my truth, rather than simply trying to sell you on something.
If there’s something else you want to know, just ask. Maybe I’ll tell you. And thanks for reading, and listening.
